The Gold Star Memorial Bridge spanning Groton and New London

It is ironic that this photo was taken and the post
written days prior to the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minnesota. The
New London Day even has a photo of the Gold Star Bridge on
its cover today. But I'll stick with my original photo and post and consider it
a mere coincidence. Synchronicity is too strong a word.

When we moved to Southeastern CT in 1971, we drove across the
Gold Star Bridge twice trying to find the Naval Submarine Base.
You see, my husband's orders read that he would be
stationed at Subase NLON. Silly us, thinking the Submarine Base
was in New London rather than Groton, CT. At that time, the Gold Star
Bridge, which was built in 1943, was a single span. A few years
later, a second steel truss bridge was added to cross the Thames River between
New London and Groton.
