Ledyard conducts second recount in two years.

Connecticut's 2nd District recount continued in Ledyard this afternoon at 2:00PM. The recount was conducted at the old Gales Ferry School, across the street from my RE/MAX Realty Group office. Kerry and I decided to watch the proceedings. This was the second recount held in Ledyard in as many years, as last year's race ended in a close contest to decide control of the Town Council. Ledyard was one of the last of the 65 towns to report today, so it attracted a bevy of TV crews including Channel 8 and 3 plus all the local newspaper reporters and cameramen.

While I was watching the events, I recalled something my friend George Souto from McCue Mortgage Company mentioned in a blog he did after election day. George is the Republican Head Moderator in Middletown, CT. He wrote ...."In most towns the Election Workers are elderly, and they are starting to reach the point that they are not able to do this any longer. We need a younger generation to step up and start fulfilling those duties. The system needs to go through some big changes and what better people to bring about some of those technological changes then us."

I thoroughly agree with George. It is time to find young people to do the work that has been carried on for years by the same elderly volunteers who have given generously of their time. With that in mind, I was delighted to see a young gal working as a counter of absentee ballots. I'm sorry I wasn't able to ask her name, or take her photo as she certainly deserved an award for the youngest election worker I've ever seen. AND just in time .... as electronic voting technology will soon be arriving to a voting machine near you!

The rest of the story.... The Ledyard count was off by only one vote, a good testament to our fine volunteers. And Kerry and I made the evening news.
