Hell Hollow Road - Site of Maude's Grave

<img alt="Hell Hollow Forest" hspace="6" src="http://static.flickr.com/107/284623451_cc5393fab0_m.jpg" align="left" vspace="4" border="0" /> Back in the 1980's, I listed some new construction homes in the Voluntown area.  A local builder, HLM Development, had about 15 lots in the area of Congdon Road, plus a few more over on Hell Hollow Road.  I remember my first ride out to Hell Hollow Road. I asked the builder incredulously, "You are going to build houses here???"    We entered from the Town of Sterling end and there wasn't even electricity in some sections.  It was mighty desolate.  He did end up  building houses there. They were small houses with very very deep wells.  I remember the builder had a heck of a time drilling for water.  I was able to sell them fairly quickly.  It really is beautiful country and the prices were very affordable for new construction.I had no idea!!!   Kerry, our Client Care Manager, mentioned that her daughter Katie wanted to go to Hell Hollow Road on Halloween to visit Maude's Grave.  She sent me a link to a site describing <a title="Haunted Places in Connecticut" href="http://theshadowlands.net/places/connecticut.htm">Haunted Places in Connecticut</a>, which includes a grave site on Hell Hollow Road.  It seems, according to legend, an Indian girl named Maude was killed by English soldiers in a section of forest off Hell Hollow Road. Hell Hollow was named beacuse the land there was of poor quality for farming. The legends probably are not true.

In The Day of October 26, 2003, reporter Eileen McNamara published an article about the Maud Reynolds legend, after researching town records and interviewing descendants of the Reynolds family. The article indicates that Maud was less than 2 years old when she died. She may have been buried near the homestead so that the grave could be seen from the house; two of her brothers are buried nearby.  The article goes on to mention that, after Maud's grave stone was repeatedly vandalized and replaced, posted at the site warning that anyone who tampered with the grave would be cursed; this may have been how the mistaken legend got started.I have collected the information and cited sources in a trail guide, The Story of the Yawgoog Trails, at:<a title="Hell Hollow" href="http://www.mdc.net/~dbrier/yawgoog/trails/hell-hollow.html">http://www.mdc.net/~dbrier/yawgoog/trails/hell-hollow.html</a>The sources are listed in Appendix C.
