Ledyard Politics

Ledyard Election 2009

A letter to the editor in the New London Day accused Ledyard Republicans of stealing candidate signs. Oh please. I’ve been involved in Ledyard politics for 25 years and every year some whiner complains about sign stealing. Two years ago, I put up an extra large professionally printed sign at the Ledyard Middle School entrance, one of the more popular sign locations in town. It was gone within 45 minutes. Did I accuse the Ledyard Democrats of stealing my sign? No, I didn’t. I didn’t think it was politically motivated and just assumed someone wanted the plywood.

It’s a fact of life that signs will be run over, stolen or in one case so far this season, torn up in many pieces. The torn up candidate sign on Route 214 was one of a Republican but I don’t hear that candidate whining. Pete Champagne, who isn’t running this year, always lost signs. I would bet there are a few teenagers with VOTE CHAMPAGNE signs in their bedrooms. In fact, I’ve long suspected that young people, Halloween tricks, and election season are all connected when it comes to sign trashing.

Is it right?  No. But there are plenty of more important things to worry about in Ledyard.

Mr Tobias asks “Are we dumb enough to trust a party that uses dirty tricks to try to win elections?  I would ask, “Are we dumb enough to trust a candidate who thinks the loss of political signs is an important election issue to Ledyard Taxpayers?”

RE: Ledyard Politics

Common Sense
With common sense responses like this, it is easy to see why you were the top vote getter in yesterday's election. Congratulations!

Thanks John.  I pretty much tell it like it is.
