| July 30, 2007 | | What your real estate agent can't tell you. | Buyers relocating to Eastern Connecticut have plenty of questions about the region. I can answer questions about weather, utility rates, the local casinos and home values. I can even give my opinion on the perfect place to board Max. But I can't answer the most important question of many homebuyers - Which school system is best? That subject is off limits for real estate agents, as Fair Housing Laws restrict the information an agent can give. When I first started selling real estate over 30 years ago, school information wasn't readily available. Clients became frustrated when I appeared to be stonewalling (I called it tap dancing) by not answering questions about school systems. That's all changed as the information is now available online. Most school systems in the area have their own websites but better yet, the CT State Department of Education has a comprehensive "Education Home Page" which includes Strategic School Profiles. While I can give you my opinion on where to find the best lobster roll, I can't tell you which school systems I favor. You'll need to rely on the internet for that! | | | |
