Photo Friday in Eastern CT

The Little White School House in Gales Ferry

Gales Ferry School

I didn't have to go very far to find this week's Friday Photo. I get to see this little gem of a one room school house everyday. Located just 2 doors away from my RE/MAX Realty Group office on Hurlbutt Road, this tiny 660 square foot building is often photographed, sketched and painted by area artists.  The Gales Ferry School House is 660 square feet and is still heated today by a woodstove as it was 100 years ago. The building is now owned by the Ledyard Historical Society.  You'll find more information about the Gales Ferry School in their book "Historic Ledyard - Volume 1 - Gales Ferry Village", available at the town libraries.

P.S.  Teacher salaries in Gales Ferry were approximately $112 a year in 1860.
