On Smith Pond in Gales Ferry

Frigid weather brings some rewards

Smith Pond in Gales Ferry

They were skating on Smith Pond in Gales Ferry today.  A group of boys were enjoying a game of hockey.  I don't remember the last time I saw winter activity on Smith Pond.  My son Jeff  (now 35) skated on the small frozen pond as a child but it seems the winters have been milder since then.  When I pass the pond on the way to work, it's usually ducks and geese that I see and maybe an occasional novice fisherman.  The recent stretch of below freezing weather has firmed up the water giving it a nice hard surface so the ducks and geese are playing their games elsewhere.  While I don't love this cold weather, it sure is nice to see the activity.  It's not Golden Pond but it's close to home.
