| September 30, 2006 | | The pleasure of sitting on a review board | I had the opportunity and honor of sitting on the Eagle Scout Review Board for Matthew Carmack of Ledyard. The Board reviewed Matthew's Eagle Scout's application, reference letters and service project report. Matthew's service project was to develop a walking trial in Gales Ferry from the Hillside Drive trailhead through the wooded area of Avalonia Land Conservancy property known as the Pine Swamp Wildlife Corridor to the Dow Centennial Preserve parcel at the Queen Eleanor trailhead, a distance of approximately 1.5 miles, connecting two of the five parcels in the Gales Ferry open land sites owned and managed by the Avalonia Land Conservancy. This project involved cleaning debris from the area and building a bridge across a stream which drains the swamp during wet weather. To raise funds for his project, Matt held a Pasta dinner at the Gales Ferry Fire House. According to the "Eagle Board of Review Guidelines", "the proceedings are not to be disclosed to any person who is not a member of the Board of Review." So let me just say this....Matt, who just turned 16 was as poised as a 21 year old. He certainly made an impression on me as he discussed leadership issues and his scouting life. He gave credit to his family and his faith. Congratulations Matthew Carmack! | | | |
