Ledyard Fair Weekend

On corn dogs, traffic and MTV

This weekend is the Ledyard Fair.  I must admit, being a city kid from Pittsburgh. (How about those Pittsburgh Steelers, huh?), I'm not much of a fair goer.  Each year the Ledyard Republican Town Committee sponsors a corn dog booth. Members of the committee volunteer to man the booth and sell corn dogs, to help fund future campaigns. I don't volunteer as a boothie, but wanting to do something for the cause, I became the official corn dog shuttle volunteer.  I keep the corn dogs in my freezer at home and shuttle them up to Ledyard when supplies dwindle. Usually my first call to duty is on Saturday. Imagine my surprise when I got a call Friday night for more corn dogs.  This is the first year I needed to make a "corn dog run" on a Friday Night. As I drove up to Ledyard, it was obvious the crowds were much larger than in past years, with shuttle busses, traffic, and cars parked everywhere, some wedged in very creative places.

Could it have been the magnificent weather that attracted the big crowds?  The appearance of Turbo and Charlie, oxen extraordinaire?  The cotton candy, fried dough and clam chowder? Nah, I suspect it was MTV.  You betcha, MTV was in Ledyard, CT.  For the past 2 months, MTV camera crews have followed 15 year old Katherine Maher of Gales Ferry, who's dream was to become the next Miss Ledyard Fair.  The filming was for a television show called "Made".  Made's website explains "On every new episode of Made, one willing candidate embarks on a mission to transform his or her life."  We'll be seeing Katherine on an episode in the future.

Although Maher wasn't named Miss Ledyard Fair, she was voted Miss Congeniality.  Congratulations Katherine Maher!
