Newsmaker of the Day: Jean Cole of Thompson

profile

In the news: Jean Cole, 80, of Thompson wrote a chapter in a book titled “The Newborn as a Person: Enabling Healthy Infant Development Worldwide.”

Background: Cole, a native of Scotland, worked for infant specialist Dr. T. Berry Brazelton for 20 years at the Brazelton Institute at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. She taught how to use the Brazelton scale, a test that measures a newborn’s behavioral style. Cole holds a master’s degree in child development from Wheelock College.

Family: Cole and her husband, Floyd, have five children and seven grandchildren.

About the book: It is a text for professionals worldwide in infant development. Cole’s chapter is titled: “Preparing Professionals to Work with Newborns: The Brazelton Institute Experience: United States.”

The Brazelton scale: Newborns are generally administered with the Apgar scale, which rates a child’s appearance, pulse, responsiveness, muscle activity and breathing. Some hospitals also give the Brazelton test, which picks up an infant’s behavioral style. The results give caregivers clues in handling and nurturing the infant. The exam, which has been around since the early 1970s, takes 20 minutes, Cole said, and is “the most important 20 minutes in a baby’s life.” Brazelton, now 90, views a baby’s behavior as its way of communicating.

Quotable: “It should be every child’s birthright,” Cole said of the Brazelton test. “Dr. Brazelton said it was like peeling away layers — like an onion, with the baby at the core. It’s a fascinating process. People have told me it’s almost mystical — you see how the baby is responding.”
